The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) held a large celebration in the municipality of Tanhuato, Michoacán, in honor of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," and his lieutenant Heraclio Guerrero Martínez, alias "El Tío Laco." A possible connection has been raised between local authorities in Michoacán and the organization of the event, reminiscent of a similar celebration that took place in Coalcomán last month.
In December 2023, images circulated of a posada in Coalcomán where thanks were given to the CJNG leader for the delivery of toys and gifts to the community. Following this, state and federal prosecutors began investigations to clarify responsibilities. Subsequently, an investigation was opened against the mayor of Coalcomán for alleged advocacy of violence and links to organized crime.
The mayor categorically denied the accusations and stated that she has had no relationship with the cartel, emphasizing that all her actions are institutional and in collaboration with the corresponding authorities. Despite this, the Secretary of Government of Michoacán did not rule out the possibility that there may be local officials with links to the criminal organization.
The event in Tanhuato saw the presence of alleged CJNG members, whose faces were shown in photographs circulated during the celebration. Additionally, the initials of the organization were displayed in the fireworks. The federal prosecutor's office has already initiated an investigation into this, requesting the separation of the mayor of Coalcomán and a thorough review of what occurred at the posada.
In both Coalcomán and Tanhuato, authorities are being closely monitored to prevent any type of relationship with criminal groups and to ensure that the corresponding laws are respected and enforced. The controversy surrounding these events has generated condemnation reactions from different entities, highlighting the opposition to the advocacy of violence by the president of Mexico.
